General Management Development Program

The General Management Development Program (GMDP) is a transformative full-time development program that grooms early-in-career talent. Colleagues experience three 13-month rotational assignments across enterprise segments. Sponsored by CVS President and CEO, Karen Lynch, the program offers a unique opportunity for accelerated development of the general ​​​​​​​management skillset, while providing a well-rounded experience, exposure to the business, as well as honoring participants’ leadership capabilities.

How You Will Grow

Career Trajectory

The General Management Development Program believes it is essential to challenge you early on in your career. You will develop as a leader through your rotational and committee assignments, which are designed to progressively ease your transition from school into your corporate career.

While your rotation assignments are where you’ll develop most of your business knowledge, your committee roles will provide you the opportunity to lead teams and projects alongside your esteemed General Management Development Program network and colleagues.

Following the program, participants are expected to graduate into various lateral or promotional roles throughout the enterprise including people management roles.

In addition to rotation-specific work, GMDP Associates participate in committees that focus on various program initiatives. These committees are led by GMDP Associates who have already completed at least one year in the program. Examples include but are not limited to:

Aetna Commercial Business, South Central Market Strategy

  • Supported strategic planning initiatives for Aetna’s Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico markets.

Rotation 2

Aetna TPA & Payer Solutions, Shared Services Informatics Analyst

  • Developed performance network reporting for key clients and revamped sales and marketing materials for pharmacy and medical management teams.

Rotation 1

Aetna Medicare Stars Strategy

  • Provided consulting and data analysis to national Medicare Stars Strategy leads and served as interim lead for Southeast region, focusing on Star rating improvement initiatives.

GMDP Mentorship Program

Mentoring is viewed as a powerful means to promote ongoing professional and career development in organizations, driving growth potential and win-win results. Throughout your three rotations within the GMDP, you will have an opportunity to be both a mentor and mentee.

Incoming GMDP Associates will receive a peer mentor to help them throughout their first year, particularly with onboarding needs. Afterwards, a colleague is paired with various executive mentors throughout the rest of their time in the program. Colleagues will also get the opportunity to accept a role as mentor to interns and the new starting classes.

Commercial Product Disruptive Innovation

  • Developed strategy and business case for an innovative product solution that focuses on improving affordability and access to care for Aetna customers and members. Set to launch in 2023!

Aetna Medicare Stars Strategy

  • Provided consulting and data analysis to local Medicare Stars Strategy leads for Aetna’s joint venture and Ohio markets, focusing on contract-level performance improvement

Rotation 1

Specialty Underwriting

  • Supported the planning and implementation of Whole Case Underwriting across Middle Market (500-5,000 employees) and National Accounts (5,000+ employees), a process that encourages cross sell and profitability opportunities for Aetna’s Medical, Dental, Vision, Pharmacy, Voluntary, and Stop Loss products.

GMDP Curriculum

In addition to on-the-job learning, you will receive educational curriculum throughout your time in the GMDP. Trainings are designed to promote company values while developing business acumen, technical skills, and personal leadership branding. It stimulates intellectual curiosity through professional certifications, mental health training, technical overviews in areas like underwriting and finance, executive presentation workshops and more.

You will also be able to participate in speaker series, book and media club events, and more, most of which feature leaders from all segments of the company as well as cross-functional areas.

Requirements

  • Be currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree*
  • Have an anticipated graduation date between December 2022 and May 2023
  • Have a major, minor or concentration relevant to the position. Examples include: Business Administration, Marketing, Public Health, or similar business/healthcare related majors
  • Note: Majority of the talent pool selected for the GMDP full-time program comes from the previous summer’s GMCIP intern cohort

*Note: Master’s and MBA students will be considered if they obtained their Bachelor’s degree within 18 months of starting a Master’s or MBA degree program

Are You a Good Fit?

  • Have leadership experience. Examples may include project leadership, workplace responsibilities, active roles in student/social organization activities, or sports
  • Encourage collaboration and a positive environment to improve team effectiveness
  • Have internship or work experience in related fields such as business or healthcare
  • Exhibit strong analytical and problem resolution skills
  • Adapt to challenging situations and has determination to meet tight deadlines
  • Have an openness to relocate for 13-month rotations to US-based core GMDP locations such as: Austin, TX; Chicago, IL; Hartford, CT; New York, NY; Plantation/Miami, FL; San Diego, CA; Woonsocket, RI; and more
